I'm a new player but getting along ok. However, I cannot figure out where to spend the gold coins. Thanks.

You can spend gold at the cs(consignment shop) in balefort castle. This can be found on the world map. Some vendors in town and other players can also trade with you. I recommend you save up your gold as you will need them later on in the game.

Pause menu->world map->balefort castle->enter towne-> find arthur

Gold is the not purchased with real money currency, it can be spent by either trading with other players, buying items from certain NPCs in townes, or spent in the CS (consignment shoppe located in Balefort Castle, Fort Blackstone)
