I think that if people couldn't exchange gold for platinum in game to progress through the story if they cannot afford to buy platinum. An even better option is to allow people to trade items in the auction house for platinum... that would lead more people to purchase auctionhouse upgrades. It would also allow people who cannot buy to be able to have the same experience. (Somewhat like the mmo "fallen sword")
