Apparently there is a better choice of gear for your mage rather than the mythic set. I recall reading that the mythic helm is still unbeatable item for mage, while the armor not so. Nevertheless, to get your helm upgreaded you also require the armor, so you may as well go for it. Hope this helps you.

If u want to get into details I can dug out that niecly written post suggesting gear for all classes capped at 41lvl.

I held off buying mythics for the same reason. I was scared that I would spend all that gold and then they would be worthless. I regretted waiting. It is the best set you can get for a mage.
