Every birthday is a cause for celebration for the Notts family, what with the shadows of the enemy that loomed over their lives. And what father could say no his blue princess? Certainly not Haxx, who was already guilt-ridden from spending more time at work than in the nursery.
The Nott high command who came to the party just pretended they did not notice, or if they did, they gave Haxx that universal League of Fathers look of understanding.
"Nice uh, uh, bush there, Haxx," said one venerable general, waving his gnarled hand in the direction of Haxx's midsection.
Haxx blushed purple. "Thank you, sir," he murmured. "It's the kidlet's request."
The cadet mages were not so kind. The bravest of them came up to him and made quips like: "You'll scare Inan Hesh for sure now, sir."
Or: "How do you keep the plants from falling off, sir? Rooted them with clock?"
Even his brother Hox was no help. He plucked a leaf and fed it to his pet Deary. "There's a caterpillar on it," he said calmly after being glared at. "I'm a seer. And I can see you losing pieces of clothing very soon."
But never mind the cadets (they would be sent on a week long wolf exermination operation soon) or Hox (and his blasted Deary). All Haxx remembered from the party was Hera taking him aside and whispering in his ear, "Daddy, you look very handsome."
