Default Troubleshooting: A Guide to aid WiFi connectivity issues

    Attachment 142237
A Guide To Aid WiFi Connectivity Issues

This guide is something I've been meaning to write for a while now...So lets get started

    Prologue
If your WiFi connectivity is good (i.e. connects to websites very well), then this guide may or may not serve to help you out.

    Who Is This Guide For?
    • This guide is written to help those who are having connectivity issues within their house (as in they get strong signal at one location in their house, and little to no signal in another location.)
    • Those who just want a little extra knowledge on WiFi

First things first, Some Basic WiFi Terminology...
(If there's a terminology you don't understand, please refer to this)
    • WiFi - This doesn't actually stand for anything...
    • AP - WiFi Access Point
    • IEEE 802.11 - A set of media access control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) specifications for implementing wireless local area network (WLAN) computer communication in the 2.4, 3.6, 5, and 60 GHz frequency bands.
    • WEP - Wired Equivalent Protection, the original WiFi protection method. This method of protecting one's wifi was weak, and easily crackable.
    • WPA - WiFi Protected Access. This replaced WEP. It uses the TKIP encryption protocol, and is significantly more secure than WEP
    • WPA2 - Version 2 of WPA. It uses the AES encryption protocol. It is currently the most secure encryption protocol.
    • IP - Internet Protocol. Simply put, its like your device's "Address", so routers/servers/connections know where to send data packets to.
    • WiFi Packets - Data is sent over wifi in Packets. Packets are what are sent between Server and Client
    • Server - A machine that processes requests sent from either another server, or a client, via HTTP
    • Client - A service requester. An example would be the AL app on your device.
    • 2.4GHz Frequency - The more standard/common frequency for WiFi. Many devices support this.
    • 5GHz Frequency - A newer WiFi Frequency. It is faster than 2.4GHz, but has a more limited range.

    Difference between 2.4GHz and 5GHz
2.4GHz gives you a larger range for WiFi, but slower speed
5GHz gives you faster speed, but limits range, and can not go through walls as easily as 2.4GHz. Another bad this is that not many devices support 5GHz (as of currently)

I think thats enough for now...
I'll add to this if needed...

    Lets get started...

    Why Is My WiFi Lagging?
Causes of WiFi Connection Lag (Listed but not limited to)
    • Too many devices connected at once.
    • All devices using the same WiFi channel
    • Not enough RAM in your WiFi Router
    • You are too far away from STS's servers

How To Fix WiFi Lag (Listed but not limited to)
    • Disconnect unused devices from the WiFi Network
    • Buy more APs (Access Points)
    • Turn your Router Off. Wait around 20 seconds. Turn it back in
    • Not really much you can do about your distance from STS's servers...except I guess move closer to STS's servers? *shrugs*

Technical explanation for the third bullet
WiFi routers, like computers/tablets/phones, have RAMs. Like a computer, when RAM space gets low, the device starts to lag.
RAM is like a "temporary storage" where data is temporarily stored. It all goes away once the device is powered off and rebooted.

Do you seem to get strong signal in one room and weak signal in another?
Where Should I Place My WiFi Router?
    Possible Placements for your Router:
    • At the middle of your house. (If the middle of your house is a large room, mount the router on a wall or ceiling
    • At the location in which you mostly use your device(s)

Is There an Alternative To Moving My Router?
Yes there is. If you're like me, there are a LOT of wires near my router.
--> Buy more WiFi APs (Access Points). Preferably one that supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies.

Device seems to be lagging, but WiFi is fine
If you are seeing a drop in FPS (Frames Per Second), but the ping is fine.
You have probably set your game settings to Battery Saver which allows you to save battery during gaming, it decreases your frame rate.

If your phone is running on max frame rate (i.e. no battery saver setting on game)
Your device may be running low on RAM (Random Access Memory)

    1. Power off your device
    2. Wait about 20 seconds (RAM data doesn't stay in your device forever. When the device turns off, RAM's data dissolves into meaningless electrons)
    3. Turn back on your device. Your device should be running with smoother FPS

If none of these are helping you, please read and post required data to ★[Lag Log]★ created by the awesome forumer: Zylx
This thread can help Devs identify further what may be the cause of lag.

Thats it for now. I'll add to this in a bit.

    Hope this helps you

    Nice guide.

I'll also like to add that if your wifi connection is fine, it could also be your graphics processor not being optimal for the process you are running. (ie: graphical lag)

Note: There could also be some server side problems, distance of your location VS the server location that can cause lag as well

Your issue seems to be something related to the STS servers
The devs are investigating it: HERE

As for my guide, I wrote it to try to help fix connectivity issues on WiFi (as in if your connection is slow regardless where you visit)

What exactly does it look like when it fails?

    Things it could be:
    * Your ISP modifying http responses (some try to inject crap into them) - this should not affect the web client but can affect android/ios.
    * Your IP address being in a blacklisted block
    * Network outage between you and our servers
    * Your ISP doing port / address filtering in some combination which prevents getting to our servers.

It would also be helpful to check if you can connect using the web client: https://account.spacetimestudios.com/arcanelegends

Please either screenshot or describe exactly what it looks like. No new IP blocks were blacklisted today, so I doubt it's that on our end if it just started today.
Have you rebooted your device and/or router?
PM me your IP address (https://whatismyipaddress.com/) and I can check blacklists.
It's sounding like a network outage somewhere.

Is that on android or web?

If it's getting that far, it's not:
    * Your ISP modifying http responses (some try to inject crap into them)
    * Your IP address being in a blacklisted block
    * Network outage between you and our servers
