Devs already said they cant make male and female cause they need to re-edit every item that exist in game so it can looks like for man or woman and its too much work.
Not having a male and female version of each class was one of many ways this game feels like a big step backwards after playing a couple of years in a different STS game, Star Legends.
They could definitely do it, because they did it in that game.
Another MAJOR step backwards is the fixed camera in AL. In SL, you could rotate the camera freely so you could always see enemies. In AL, sometimes you can't see the enemies you are heading towards because the camera angle won't allow it!

Also, technically the camera can be unlocked..... But again... Locking it means they can cut some slack on certain places, where's it's not visible by the camera. Which then save them resources.
Imagine if they do implement camera rotation and different genders.... Then that means that will take up double the resource, which means more load on the server, and potentially double the lag.
We all want more lag right?

And secondly, lots of people find mages cute, and we like our little blue thing, so IF the devs does change it, lots more people will quit.
Not to mention the amount of rework needed to change it.... I'd much prefer they spend that effort on bug fix, new items and events.
OR.... you can get the China version of AL, which has mage as a little girl instead....
Whatever, mage stays as a cute smurf, no need to change tha way it looks.
