No, you don't need a single penny of real money to get any necessary item in game, such as gear..platinum is for premium items such as vanities, elixrs, and some campaigns and pvp and ctf maps.

you can use in game money received from drops for example on gear to use.

What level is your main character? And what Class?

You don't need to buy Plat gear if you choose not to.. just need to find a good group around your level and farm what gear you need at your level range. Main reason for the questions above
