Trading stacked items

Earlier I was trying to trade a large amount of elixirs , after adding all to the trade window and us both confirming it said his inventory was full. So then we tried again with only 600 elixirs, this time it said my inventory was full (he added 1 random item to the trade). In reality Neither one of us had a full inventory

It should only be saying inventory full either if out of slots of the relevant type, or would result in going over 999 of a stacked item. I'll look into it when I have time.

Is it possible to have for example 3 stacks or more of the same elixir(3x 999 pack)?

No, one stack of 999 per item type.
