I'd Greatly Appreciate it. I don't want the answers, I just want to understand how to solve them

Here a Problem I need help with...

    24. -3^2 ~ -3^3 (-3X2^0)

    ~ = Subtraction Sign.
    ^ = Exponent.
    - = Negative.

    -3^2 = -9
    -3^3 = -27
    (-3X2^0) = -3

    So, we have:

    -9 - -27 (-3)

    which would be:
    -9 - 81

    which would be:

    -90

    I may be wrong but doesn't (-3x2^0) = 0?

    2^0 = 0
    -3x0 =0

    Two tips:

    1. Numbers with exponents not confined to parenthises, the symbol (+/-) is not factored til after the number is raised by the exponent.

    2. Numbers raided to the ZERO power (2^0) will always equal 1.

The rest of the problem is basic math. Hope this helps bud.

    24. -3^2 ~ -3^3 (-3X2^0)

    ~ = Subtraction Sign.
    ^ = Exponent.
    - = Negative.
    Is this it?

    -3^2 = -3 x -3 = 9
    -3^3 = -3 x -3 x -3 = -27
    -3 x 2^0 = -3 x 1 = -3

    So -3^2 ~ -3^3 (-3X2^0) = 9 - (-27 x -3) = 9 - (81) = - 72

LMAO, three different answers so far :P

-3^2 = -3 x -3 = 9 This is where you go wrong, since there are no brackets around the 3 it is first taken to the power of 2, the minus stays.
    -3^3 = -3 x -3 x -3 = -27
    -3 x 2^0 = -3 x 1 = -3

    So -3^2 ~ -3^3 (-3X2^0) = 9 - (-27 x -3) = 9 - (81) = - 72

Typo on my part where I got (-9). I just had minor surgeryvand probably shouldn't do math on prescription painkillers.

Bronx is right but my explanation was to help Paar understand "why" instead of just giving the answer.

Why would you choose to put brackets round the 3 if there are none there?

Upon further investigation it would seem it isn't clear at all...

-3 squared in my school was always -3 x -3

Check out these though - lol - confusing stuff for kids today, eh?

EDIT: post the answer Paar whenyou get it... Good luck

    It's 90
    Crim, -3x2^0 is not -9, it's -3
    Just a little calculation mistake

-3^2 is not the same as (-3)^2
    Think of it as (-1)(3)^2

I love being singled out. Read my edit. Thanks.

    x^0 ≡ 1

We can prove this by x/x = 1 which is the same as (x^1)/(x^1) = 1. Since x^1 is being divided by x^1, we can take away the powers to obtain x^0. We have done nothing but simplified the LHS, the RHS stays the same.

Of course we aren't allowed to let x = 0 or else we'd be dividing by zero to get infinity.
