You can see where the texture of the ground changes near the middle of the room. When it's time for him to throw crud, if he finds someone further than that, he'll target them with it. If not, he'll do his big attack and then target a random person for the crud.

For the pink circle/skull thing, you just need to not have been the last one to get it when it runs out on you. Most efficient is someone taking it just before the previous person's would end.
