You get story tokens by completing specific daily quests, although I don't remember exactly where to go to do this off the top of my head. I think it's the tavern in the first town.

The purps are Hauntlet coins, you get them from running the Hauntlet in Kraag. Basically used for the same thing Story tokens are, getting that gear and some pets. Other than that, pretty useless.

Story tokens are given for daily quests from the bards in each of the towns.

Hauntlet coins are given from two daily quests for the hauntlet. You also get a hauntlet coin each time you run the hauntlet in 3min 30sec or less.

You can buy pets or crappy items from NPCs with them.
