My opinion is also incredibly radical, contrarian, and widely unaccepted by others but I think linked to yours - I think the game started to die when players pushed STS to make it a solo game where any class could solo the toughest levels.
I started playing the game way back in the beginning. I had no idea what I was doing and frankly, was terrible at it. But... maps required a team of four, with members from various classes, to complete. And newbies (nabs) like me needed more powerful players to help... and there were a LOT of players who needed help (in maps like Nordr haha) and there were LOTS of players willing to help. It was a highly team-driven game. Guilds mattered because that's where you found your parties.
I left the game sometime around 2016 and I came back just a couple years ago.... to find a totally different game. It was a race to have the best stats and best gear so you could be one of the first to solo a map or elite boss. Players who didn't have arcane gear were left in the dust. Players who didn't have speed sets were left in the dust.
A lot of players prefer this game style. They like being a top OP player and soloing the maps. That's fine. I don't begrudge them their opinion. But I just miss the days of strategizing with your team... tanks to pull the mobs and protected the rogue who did the damage while the mage stayed on the periphery and did damage from there and healed the team. That sort of thing.
But... it has become very obvious to me I'm in the minority on that opinion.
More commonly accepted is the opinion that STS has increasingly pushed this to be a pay-to-play game and free-to-play players are going to be iced out. The gold loot nerf on the 91 expansion was the nail in the coffin on that one... dune1 only gives about 65% the gold that e-hedo did and it's rare you can just join randomly and run with a full map. And even if you do everyone scatters through the map instead of sticking together. Without a pt, there's no good gold to be had there. F2P will be officially dead as soon as the current f2p players run out of gold. If they haven't already.
