Personally miss the promo codes,
would there be any chance of implementing some new ones for when the promotion period begins? possibly something like the amazon set or a particular level set where you can choose an item to gain?

Sorry, no plans to do this. Players just circulated promo codes for free items. The purpose of promo codes was to understand the acquisition source for an account/player and if the promo code is used without its original intent, that just makes determining where to spend marketing dollars worthless.
