Question Banish = Instakill? Also, whats "lesser enemies"?

conceptually both banish and instakill achieve the same result - they instantly take away an enemy off the map. but mechanically are they the same?

theres pets whos abilities allow them to banish mobs, while others can instakill. whats the fundamental difference between the two if at all?

if theres no difference between them, can the two stack? like banish chance + instakill chance = x% total vanish chance - does this work or am i completely off base here? does banish stack with banish or instakil with instakill?

lastly, what does "lesser enemies" even mean? is it like all enemies who aren't either named mobs, minibosses, bosses or players? or something like enemies below a certain health threshold?

tia for indulging me and helping answer them.

Disclaimer: info below is just my understanding of these mechanics so take it with a grain of salt.

Banish can come from multiple sources, for instance:
    - pet passive attack (heroic eggsorcist, garmr, ghostly, etc)
    - pet aa (e.g. samael)
    - gems (up to 4 winter stones)

Not sure if there are any gears with banish, I can't recall any.

Let's say you have a setup with all above mentioned banish sources. All of them work independently from each other. For example, 1) pet attacks 2) pet aa is activated 3) player hits mobs and each winter stone has its own chance to banish. The more banish sources you have, the higher effective banish odds are. So it kinda stacks, although not in the same way as % stats do where you just sum them up.

For example, if you have 4 winter banish stones each with 2% chance to banish, then every hit on a mob will have 7.76% chance to banish. Google for "effective odds of an event after 4 trials if a trial has 2% success chance" to see why it is not 8% as one may expect.

PS insta kill when mob health is less than 20% is called lethality. Unlike banish lethality is stacking stat.

PPS I think insta kill is a general term. Banish is a variant of insta kill so is lethality. There's also life steal from soulbinder reaping jewel that also insta kills.

i get the points re: banishment and independent chances as well as how lethality works. whats perplexing to me is how pets like samael, grimm or cosmo aa works - whose wordings explicitly mention "instantly kill" , followed by some variant of "applies to only lesser enemies", and not banish. whereas banish as a term appears almost always in passives like fatima, eggso and garmr and usually not with the lesser enemies clause.

theres also this thing where garmr/eggso banishes working show up with the *BANISH* flavor text which at least shows that it worked, whereas these instakill pet aas im not sure if they do if at all. and the reason why this is all perplexing to me is because full health mobs are absolutely impacted by banish but idk if the instakill ability has some health clause associated with it like the lethality mechanic does.

obviously, like you said, they are variants with the same outcome but how they work mechanically - at least banish and lethality - are different. im going to experment a bit more with this but for now im inclined to think this instakill ability works a tad bit dfferent. id love to be proven wrong, which means ill have learned something.

    PS
i know samael's aa is called Banishment and its description explains what it does, which is okay, but maybe thats where this all stems from? or maybe im just too daft lol
