The Motherload Vanity Glitch?

I have been told if you don't kill any enemies and then you get the boss without killing any enemies then shoot and kill all the barrels there is a 70% chance for a vanity drop is this true or false?

This one is almost as fun to mess up as the dont open the boxes rumours..
The second someone yells that i rush to the nearest box and.. open it.
