    Default Pally Mage

Why are there so many Pally Mages?

I was thinking about trying one..

What are the Pros and Cons for pally mage?

    Can they solo?

Do they work well in a group?

Do they get more kills than a Full int mage or Dex/Int mage?

    Can Str/Int mages survive?

    Also this is for PVE.

    Please answer my many questions!

It's because the scythe has far too much damage so it gives mages more armour and dodge than they need in addition to fairly high skill damage
the downsides would be lower mana regen, damage, hit percentage.

As for solo'ing, all top geared for their level can solo any dungeon until fang. It is the same for this build, once you get to higher areas you will need a team for the bosses.

It's kinda like being Wolverine. Not many things come close to hurting you, and although it may take you a while eventually you win. (pve perspec)

Pallys are great for survival. They have lots of health and can heal + use the shield. They are great for running solo. But not so great in a group, because they run quickly out of mana.

Here you have a con: they need to use lots of mana potions.

I usually have problems with enough mana at lower levels on just about any int toon, but end game sets more than solve that issue personally. I have plenty at 76.

Int/Str gets more kills and survives longer than Int/Dex and full Int?

To generalize I think pure int "gets more kills" and str variants survive better at the cost of not doing as much damage as full int nuke. I'm sure there are exceptions tho so thats why I'm generalizing.
The old trade off of more damage/dies easier vs tough as hell/can't hold aggro cuz doing less damage.

    Hmm, how about:
If you run in pugs a lot go more defensive,
If you often have a good party who got your back try more offensive.
Lonestud has a good point also, wand/bracer pure int, is a good compromise.
I enjoy playing glass cannons and relying on pot spamming myself.

At lv 52 you have fought/will fight these guys:
Gurgox, goldfinger, and a bunch of others who can one shot you. 22 is pretty dang low imo.

my personal favorite is staff mages pure
    2nd intelligence dexterity combination

pure intelligence wand mage is almost as survivable as strength due to the immense amount of mana the enemies has to deplete when you mana shield and you also will kill them very fast

^yeah, I was dex/int with dex gear for damage but was too squishy. Now st/int and enjoy it a lot for pve. Me and the good bears are the last standing usually. Beastly set changed my mind quick.

I'm no master of all things Mage, birds are my fave. I just wanted to share my experience a bit.
The great thing about being in the low 50s is there is a lot of orange/green drops from sewer that are quality enough to last a while. Farm or buy from cs ( they're cheap) and save up.
You didn't mention what lev you would like to be eventually, and if it's height lev, it's gonna cost a lot to get the great sets no mater what stats you end up with.
Hopefully you have access to the free plat offers cuz it doesnt cost much to switch if you don't like.
Even though you said pve, don't hesitate to ask pvpers their opinions, they are quite savvy understanding subtle things like hidden procs on weapons.
I'm keeping the beastly on my Mage until some other str set comes close. I pug a lot so that's the real reason I'm going the defensive route. I'm often the only one who can survive and rev, and let the real killers unload without fear of a party wipe.

I am L52 and want to get to 76.
I personally like the spec's who get the most kills.

Try pure int w/wand & bracer (as thelonestud said) and take your time for a little while. Don't rely on elixirs too much, stay around a particular level range as you progress. That way you get a good feel of what to expect from those enemys.
Some levels have mobs that may change what you want to do. As in, the yeti in humania hit HARD so at that range you might prefer being some sort of pally.
If you feel you aren't doing the damage you want, and can stay alive, then try staffs.
If you get annoyed by dying with wand/bracer, respec stats with strength enough to bump health/armor instead of being pure int.
If that still feels too squishy, bump st up just enough to wear st gear.
The specs that get the most kills are generally fragile defensively, and have the best crit, to hit%, dps & high damage. Birds and mages have it made with "stealing" kills because we have the best area attacks.
The reason I don't just say "do this" is because of the cost of sets. I don't want you to blow everything on str sets when I hear you say "I personally like the specs that get the most kills". That sounds like you may prefer to nuke.

My 22 deaths have all come from sewers becasue the barrels do so much damage and my armor is so fragile.
