Damage vs. DPS?

Just wondering, but which one is more important to raise?
Damage, or DPS? (For rogues, obviously.)

there is a thread about this somewhere already, but the general idea is:

DPS for spamming white/normal damage
Damage will increase the effectiveness of your skills

It's pretty old and focusses on sorcerers but the basics are applicable for all classes.
