I still have a soft spot for my cyber set. I remember how hard I worked to finish those quests and how awesome I felt using it after all that work. And it looks cool too. I've done the quest on multiple characters now just to get them all. I hope STS one day recaptures the magic of the cyber quests so I can get that feeling again.

When L50 campaign was the highest cap release, shadow sets were worth about 1.5m a set (after they nerfed drop rates and some time passed). In these days, 1.5m was a lot considering very few people had even close to a gold cap.

Thus, as a way to entertain bored end-gamers & give an effective set for those who cannot afford shadow/AOIII sets, they released these sets. Also, back in those days, the shadow set bonus was not added until later.

Yeah, it's completely just a pride thing these days considering the time needed to get the set advances you high enough to get the next gear up. However, it is a guaranteed gear set (gotta be lucky to farm good drops) so it's a way to have something to work for if you enjoy such things.

They were released midway into the L50 campaign. You said that the purpose confused you, so I gave you the reason as to why they created them. 1000 days from that date, the purpose will still remain the same so your quote is non-applicable.
