They are called the undead, after all. They are dead, but they can move and stuff. It is different how the vampire became that way exactly according to what you are watching, reading, ect, but the way I've heard it is that the vampire that turned them infects the person with their own blood, and the vampire blood cells slowly take over.
A vampire has no ''warm'' blood. That means they can't make kids in the usual way - you know which I mean.
