As troncaat said above, playing the bear effectively is all about control. If you have no self control over your skills and spam them incessantly youʻll more than likely end up getting your self killed or booted and worse yet, others killed because of your ignorance. On the other hand, if you time your beckon perfectly and stomp your enemies into a wall your DPS loving friends can vaporize them while you run merrily off in to the distance ahead of the group to create yet another mob sandwich for the rest of your party. In the instance I illustrated above, everyone has a good time and maps fly by. I feel as if the importance of bears was most prevalent during sewers, as an effective bear could help reduce the time to run a map from 5-8 minutes down to 2-3.
As youʻll learn through playing the bear class, its one that requires a lot of learning and refinement, far more than any of the other classes so far, although when you got it down its very rewarding. Remember that the bear isnʻt only played one way, just as a mage doesnʻt only nuke, sometimes hes a paladin, or sometimes thereʻs int birds (my fave). Whichever route you choose, remember to keep the rest of your group in mind and most importantly have fun.
*EDIT*
Oh and one more thing, donʻt let anyone tell you that in order to tank you need a 1H weapon and shield, it can be done very effectively with 2H weapons provided you know how to use them and your limits (trust me on this one).
