They took it away because, while it was extremely fun and interesting in low levels, the way stat requirements were going was leading to players only being able to equip one type of gear (int/str/dex) at once with each spec in later levels. The change allowed people in end game to mix and match gear, and low PvP was largely unaffected, though some of the more extreme builds were no longer usable.
