Lol.
an comes before a vowel (a,e,i,o,u) a before a consonant (rest of alphabet)
nothing lasts forever
Well technically, it would be "I am friends with an elephant."
Or "I am a friend to an elephant."
You use "a" before a word with a consonant sound, and "an" before one with a vowel sound.
The fact that you have to pay attention to the sound of the letter, not the letter itself, makes it a little confusing. For example, even though the phrase "honest man" starts with an h, which is a consonant, you'd still put an in front of it, making it "an honest man." This is because the h in honest sounds like an o, which is a vowel.
Similarly, you'd say a unicorn, not an unicorn even though unicorn starts with a u, which is a vowel. This is because even though u is a vowel, it makes a consonant sound (yoonicorn). In terms of pronunciation, the letter y is considered a consonant sound, and therefore, you'd say "a unicorn."
EDIT: dunno what possessed me to write all that, prob boredom, but I did.
