What is the black circle (with X inside, or perhaps some other symbols in it too) above the character of the head means?

Those are head vanitys from when the xpreria play came out

The play station buttons, there's triangle, circle, square, and x. The devs would run around through townes and waving at them got you the button that they were wearing. Some devs gave specific buttons, but towards the end they'd put on whichever button if you asked for it. They're long gone now though

They are vanity items the Devs gave out in the past. They are themed like the buttons on a Playstation Controller.
