What is a referral?

I have asked around but no responses
what is a referral and what does it do???
I have been on others profiles and it will say Referrals: 3
but i dont know wut it means!!!

i'm pretty sure it's when like you refer somebody in game or else where and when they register there account to the forum they say that you refered them here

Referrals are If people have told you to register at the site. They just mean someone has advised you to register and you did
