You may be thinking of the 35-40 kite shields, they look very similar to the Shield of Legends and is very easy to make that mistake.. The Shield of Legends has always been a vanity.

Yes this is true. It wasn't a pl shield but it had a shield in the middle and was called the Saintly shield?

Least I won't remember any talk about that on forums or ingame. And I think it's always been vanity shield anyways.

No, they do have a shape in the center in the same color as the PL shield.

No. Go to cs and find kite shield, there's usually couple. They are grey or green 35-40 shields. Same as pl shield but without logo.

AO1 out of chests most commonly. They drop some other places, but there is your best bet (ao1:5 great pyramid. Lots of chests at beginning.

The only thing I have to correct on here is that it wasn't always a vanity; it was changed to a vanity shortly after the release of the shield of gratitude. Why? It gave a HUGE advantage for L10-20 Twinking.
