There is no stat difference, but, in my opinion, looks a lot like debuffs. Notice the difference on the top left, with and without the skeleton costume.

Pretty sure the skeleton head is just there to represent the fact that you are wearing a costume, similar thing is in SL. The sword definitely looks like a debuff

All costumes give you the debuff sign, as if the vanity debuffs you :O

Ai debaf yu wen yu were dat costum al stas bicom ziro. Gf! I think that debuff sign helps to know if that bear (mage or bird) has the real CoP and MfA besides looking at sparkles
