I don't think Adam was literally a day old. God did of course stay true to his word that "as for the tree of the knowledge of good and bad you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die.” (Genesis 2:17) In God's perspective, they did die that day, but also consider:
(2 Peter 3:8) However, let this one fact not be escaping YOUR notice, beloved ones, that one day is with God as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.

(Genesis 5:5) So all the days of Adam that he lived amounted to nine hundred and thirty years and he died.

And people who think God could not age the planet of His own accord severely underestimate Him. XD
