Agreed, I think it's super cool that the devs tried to do it, even though it's "not done".

But if you think about the huge game companies doing it, you might start to see why that might not be such a good thing for the small game companies. A big one like EA would have a lot of power over their distribution channels if their players were all combined in a shared in-game currency system. With that much power they could start to demand exclusive rights. The distributors are just not going to allow that. Also, the huge game companies would have an instant player base for every single game they make, and players would be inclined to stay with one game company because of the interchangeable currency. So, really, this rule protects the little guys.
