Maybe you're talking about the 'deal of the day' elix? I noticed there was an xp-only elix for sale today (3x), so that's why I was thinking this.

As I recall correctly, when they initially introduced Vinnie he gave a free combo elixir which did give faster speed and damage, but the little icon only showed an XP pot, it didn't show all 5 like buying one at traditional cost.

I believe it's probably the case with these free ones, too. So you are getting a combo elixir even if it doesn't look like it.
