Its free up to level 18
If you want to get to level 19-56, you have to buy maps with platinum

You buy maps with platinum. Plat can be aquired for free by going clicking on the Earn Free Platinum button on the main screen. You can only get so much for free though.

You can level from 1-13 in Forest Haven. Then run over to Dark Forest and you can go from level 13-18 for free. This will let you have a little more experience with the game, then you can decide if you wish to purchase platinum on additional dungeons, or obtain platinum for free using the Tapjoy feature.

All additional dungeons cost 10 platinum, so you can take a look and calculate roughy how much platinum you are going to need, and which dungeons you want to purchase. You can get to level 56 without spending much, and trust me..it's worth it

Your update problems may be the type of phone you have or the amount of free space on your phone. You need lots of virtual mem for your device to play this game. Its graphically intense. For more technical advice on this issue, contact spacetime.

I recently purchased all the in game maps via bundles and then individual maps for those that were not bundled, to get all the PvE content right now it costs exactly 75 platinum which is 10 dollars

campaign bundle without pvp/ctf, you need 75 platinum.
with pvp/ctf you need 95 platinum which you can get it free from tapjoy features.

bundles package:

1.) dungeon bundle lvl 20-30 (15 plat)
2.) elite dungeon bundle lvl 30-35 (20 plat)
3.) alien oasis bundle lvl 35-50 (20plat)

non bundle:

1.) balefort castle lvl 10-15 (10 plat)
2.) balefot sewer lvl 50-55 (10 plat)

Before bundles were around, it was way more expensive. Then also with the massive platinum cost reductions the devs did, the game is cheaper then it ever has been right now. So hundreds of hours of play time for 10 dollars, sounds great to me. Thats pennies per hour.
